Seeing Ezo Squirrels in the Northern Lands of Japan

Hokkaido, located in northern Japan, is a treasure trove of wildlife.

However, in this area, the Ezo squirrels seem to include both individuals managed by Obihiro Zoo and wild populations living naturally in the surrounding environment.
In Hokkaido, the Ezo squirrel is sometimes called “Jinezumi,” a local term meaning “ground squirrel.”
This nickname comes from their behavior: while the Ezo chipmunk is commonly seen in trees, Ezo squirrels are often spotted running across the forest floor.

However, Ezo squirrels are not found throughout all of Hokkaido. Even in this land blessed with nature, they are more frequently seen in eastern Hokkaido, a region especially rich in wildlife.
This summer, I was lucky enough to see one during breakfast at my hotel, a moment that brought me genuine joy.
To experience the charm of these adorable Ezo squirrels, I warmly invite you to visit the wild and beautiful landscapes of Hokkaido.
