This photograph shows a pygmy hippopotamus, often described as a “living fossil” because it retains characteristics believed to resemble the ancient ancestors of modern hippopotamuses. Even as an adult, the pygmy hippopotamus typically weighs only around 250 kilograms, making it much smaller than the common hippopotamus.
Along with the okapi, giant panda, and bongo, the pygmy hippopotamus is regarded as one of the world’s four great rare animals. Due to its exceptional rarity and unique evolutionary significance, it is a species that visitors should not miss when visiting this zoo.
