日本で出会った生きた化石 ― 笠岡市カブトガニ博物館
While organizing old photo archives, I came across images taken long ago at the 笠岡市立カブトガニ博物館.
They were shot with an old camera and lens, and technically they are far from perfect.
But these photographs reminded me of the quiet impact of encountering a living fossil for the first time.
昔撮影した写真を整理していたとき、笠岡市のカブトガニ博物館で撮った画像が出てきました。
古いカメラとレンズでの撮影で、今の基準で見れば決して完璧な写真ではありません。
それでも、「生きた化石」と初めて向き合ったときの感覚が、はっきりと蘇ってきました。
The museum’s dome-shaped architecture stands quietly, almost like a shell itself.
Before even entering, the building prepares visitors for an encounter with an ancient survivor that has barely changed for hundreds of millions of years.
ドーム状の建物は、まるでカブトガニの甲羅そのもののようです。
中に入る前から、何億年も姿を変えずに生き続けてきた存在と向き合う心構えが整えられます。
In front of the museum stands a symbolic stone sculpture inspired by the horseshoe crab’s form.
Its geometric shape feels timeless, reflecting the ancient design perfected long before humans existed.
博物館前に設置された石の彫刻は、カブトガニをモチーフにした象徴的な作品です。
幾何学的な形状は、人類が誕生するはるか以前に完成されていた生命のデザインを思わせます。
Inside the aquarium, horseshoe crabs rest quietly on the sandy bottom.
They hardly move, yet their presence feels powerful—proof that some life forms do not need to evolve dramatically to survive.
水槽の中では、カブトガニたちが砂の上で静かに身を寄せています。
ほとんど動かないその姿から、「変わらないこと」そのものが強さなのだと感じさせられます。
This close-up shows the curved shell surface, worn and marked by time.
Due to reflections from the aquarium glass, photographing the underside was difficult—something I hope to challenge again on a future visit.
These photographs are not meant to be perfect records.
They are fragments of memory—captured with old equipment, limited technique, and honest curiosity.
Someday, I hope to return to this museum and photograph the horseshoe crab again, this time with new skills and a clearer vision.
クローズアップで見る甲羅の表面には、長い時間を生き抜いてきた痕跡が刻まれています。
水槽ガラスの反射で腹面の撮影は難しく、次に訪れるときの課題として残りました。
これらの写真は、完成された記録ではありません。
古い機材と未熟な技術、そして純粋な興味の中で撮られた記憶の断片です。
いつか再びこの場所を訪れ、今度は腹面までしっかりと写したカブトガニの姿を残したいと思います。
