Horn Length Differences Within a Herd — Observing Individual Growth Stages
この写真は、愛媛県にある 愛媛県立とべ動物園 でシロオリックスの群れを観察した際に撮影したものです。
一見すると同じように見える個体たちですが、注意深く見ていくと、ツノの長さや体格に明確な違いがあることに気づきます。
成獣と思われるペアの個体に対し、群れの中にはツノが短い若い個体も確認できました。
また、後肢の状態や体表の特徴を比較することで、同じ群れの中でも別個体であることが判断できます。
このように、同じ環境で暮らしていても、
年齢や成長段階によって動物たちの姿は少しずつ異なります。
本記事では、とべ動物園で見られた群れの様子をもとに、ツノの成長や個体差に注目しながら、その特徴を写真とともに記録していきます。
This photograph was taken while observing a herd at Ehime Prefectural Tobe Zoological Park in Ehime, Japan.
At first glance, the animals may appear similar, but closer observation reveals clear differences in horn length and body structure among individuals within the same herd.
Alongside what appears to be a mature pair with well-developed horns, younger individuals with noticeably shorter horns can also be seen.
By comparing physical features such as the condition of the hind legs and the coat pattern, it becomes possible to determine that these animals are distinct individuals, even though they share the same group.
Even within the same environment, animals can display subtle variations depending on age and stage of growth.
In this article, I document the herd observed at Tobe Zoological Park, focusing on individual differences and horn development, and present these observations through photographs.
群れの中には、今回紹介したようにツノがまだ短い若い個体が2頭確認できました。
それぞれを単独で観察してみると、ツノの長さや体つきにわずかな違いがあり、同じ年齢であっても成長の度合いには個体差があることが分かります。
また、後肢の状態や体表の特徴を見比べることで、別々の個体であることも判断できました。
同じ群れの中で、成獣と若い個体がともに暮らす様子は、動物たちの成長過程を知るうえでとても興味深いものです。
とべ動物園で見られたこの群れは、
動物をじっくり観察することでこそ気づける個体差や成長の段階を、静かに教えてくれました。
Within the herd, two younger individuals with noticeably shorter horns were observed and photographed individually.
When examined separately, subtle differences in horn length and body shape become apparent, showing that growth varies from one individual to another, even at a similar age.
By comparing physical characteristics such as the condition of the hind legs and overall appearance, it was also possible to confirm that these animals are distinct individuals.
Seeing mature animals and younger ones living together within the same herd offers valuable insight into their stages of growth and development.
