The Orii flying fox is one of the two species of large fruit bats found in Japan and is a subspecies of the Ryukyu flying fox that inhabits Okinawa Island.
It is recognized as one of the largest fruit bats distributed in Japan.
As its name suggests, the distinctive white fur around its neck is a defining characteristic of this species.

Most bats are nocturnal animals that navigate using ultrasonic echolocation.
In contrast, flying foxes rely primarily on their vision rather than echolocation and tend to be more diurnal in their behavior.
As a result, they are less active at night and are most often seen in the early morning or at dusk, occasionally even during the daytime.
